Accelerated Reading Program

2010-11 Theme is "Around the World with AR"
Students will travel to the seven continents.
|
The main purpose of the AR committee is to encourage and reward reading.
Starting in November second through fifth graders choose from the library books to read that
have an AR sticker on the outside binder (the number in the circular label, e.g., 4.3, is the AR
level). After reading the book, the student takes the corresponding AR test either in the classroom
or library. The AR tests have varying numbers of questions, depending on the level of the book.
Books also earn varying amounts of points (e.g., a book could be worth ½ point or even 9 points,
depending on the level of the book). Students earn points for their reading comprehension, and as
they earn points, they will travel to continents around the world.
Points needed to travel to each continent and students’ current locations will be displayed on
the AR board near the library. When they reach a new continent, students will receive a
congratulations package from the PTA and our business sponsors. The first 20 students to travel to
all 7 continents will receive a big prize.
In addition, at the beginning of each month, students will have an opportunity to use their points
earned from the previous month to buy fun prizes from the AR prize cart in the library (some of the
prizes will only cost ½ point each).
Students can also accumulate their points over several months in order to be able to choose
one of the larger prizes available (e.g., some of the prizes will cost 50 points each). We will
announce the dates and times the AR prize cart will be open, and parents of younger students are
welcome to come with their children to help them select the prizes.
